The Use of Compression Sleeves
When we say compression sleeves, we are referring to the stretchable garments that we use for our legs or arms. They are used so that the pain and swelling that is associated with lymphedema will be treat. Aside from that, you can also use the for sports or for exercising activities.
Lymphedema swelling is usually found in the arms but there are times when it can be seen in the legs. The lymphatic fluid that can be found accumulating in the tissue are either called primary or secondary lymphedema. Until today, we still don’t know the cause of the primary lymphedema. Though it is very rare, symptoms can show any time at a person’s life. Secondary lymphedema, on the other hand, can be obtained from surgery, radiation therapy, or infection. The possibility of having this condition is greater for those people who have undergone lymph nodes removal surgeries. There are always ways that you can use so that you’d be able to control the symptoms once they start appearing but there is no cure yet to be fully healed.
If you are diagnosed with lymphedema, among the first things that will be recommended for treatment is the use of some compression garments. The great thing about these compression sleeves is that you can get them custom-fit since it is very important that you get the right amount of pressure to reduce the swelling. One of the most important things that you need to put in mind is that you should never use those sleeves that are too tight for you because they will restrict blood flow. If you find that your sleeve is too tight, you should take it off as soon as you can.
Most of the people who use compression sleeves wear them only when they are awake. However, you need to take it off if you will be doing some washing or swimming or anything that involves getting the sleeve wet. The last thing you need is to deal with skin irritation that may result from it. If you will be doing some physical activities, you need to do them with the sleeves on because they contribute a lot. You also need to make sure that you moisturize your skin on a daily basis. The best time to do it is when you remove the sleeve at bed time so that come morning, the cream has already dried off.
You should get at least two sleeves so that you would be able to alternate its use. The sleeves should then be washed every after use using mild soap with lukewarm or cold water. Because they can be stretched eventually, you should replace them twice a year. You can choose the kind of fabric or color that you want. There are also weights that are available for these compression sleeves for more effective use.
